MY BEGINNINGS

A Life Shaped By
Country & Family

Jo S. Stacey grew up surrounded by the rhythms of rural life in New Zealand, where horses, animals and wide open landscapes became part of her earliest memories.

With a father working as a shepherd and sheep shearer, life often meant movement — seventy-nine homes by the age of sixteen — before the family eventually settled in Australia.

These experiences shaped not only her connection to the land, but the emotional storytelling that continues to inspire her artwork today.

A MomENT OF INSPIRATION

The Day Everything
Changed

It was during a visit back home to New Zealand in her early twenties that Jo came across a John Constable exhibition.

Standing before Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop’s Grounds (1825), she found herself overwhelmed by emotion — weeping, shaking, and unable to feel the ground beneath her feet.

In that moment, she knew she wanted to become a painter.

A Second Chance And
A Deeper Purpose

After stepping away from painting for a time, Jo found renewed inspiration through an Off The Track Thoroughbred named Phoenix.

The bond they formed rekindled not only her creativity, but a deeper emotional connection to the stories and spirit behind her work.

Today, every brushstroke carries echoes of that journey — of resilience, connection and finding purpose again through art.
